Simon Harmer and Ryan Rickelton were pivotal in South Africa's triumph over Australia in the third Test at Newlands. Their combined efforts helped the Proteas secure a series win and earn vital points in the World Test Championship.
The Test commenced with South Africa showcasing strong opening partnerships. Aiden Markram and Marques Ackerman contributed 158 runs, with Ackerman narrowly missing a century. Despite Mitchell Starc's outstanding six-for with minimal runs conceded, South Africa posted 329 runs by the end of day one.
Australia’s response began with early setbacks but was steadied by a solid partnership between Matt Renshaw and Cameron Green. As the day closed, John Inglis and Alex Carey kept the momentum going, concluding the day with a slight lead.
Day three saw Simon Harmer exploiting the pitch to dismiss Inglis early. Despite a promising start, Australia was eventually bowled out for 429, giving South Africa a 100-run deficit to chase. The Proteas faced challenges as Starc, Hazlewood, and Lyon took wickets, leaving them on 140/4.
Rickelton and Wiaan Mulder mounted a critical resistance on day four with a robust 154-run partnership. Their efforts helped South Africa regain the upper hand, setting Australia a target of 288 after being bowled out for 387.
Kagiso Rabada spearheaded the attack on the final day, dismantling Australia’s top order. His efforts were complemented by Harmer, who kept the pressure on, leading to a decisive 176-run victory. This win not only sealed the series but also boosted South Africa in the World Test Championship standings.
